Members of the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards are selected in accordance with the Rules of the National Commission and the Constitution and Bylaws of the American Dental Association. The current members are listed below.

Dr. Frank J. Tuminelli, (ACP), Chair
Dr. Frank J Tuminelli is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and the Program Director of Advanced Prosthodontics at the Manhattan Veterans Administration He is Past President of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) and The Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics. Dr Tuminelli is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Dental Medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. He lectures nationally, and has authored / coauthored multiple scientific papers. Dr Tuminelli is the recipient of the 2017 Educator of the year award from the ACP. He maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics in NYC and Long Island.
Dr. Brian McAllister, (ADA), Vice-Chair
Dr Brian McAllister graduated with honors from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1993. He then completed a General Practice Residency at Wilmington Hospital, Wilmington, DE in 1994 and opened a solo practice in 1995 in Middletown, DE where he’s maintained a private practice for the past 24 years. Dr. McAllister served the Delaware State Dental Society as the State’s President 2004 -2005, Continuing Education Chair 2005-2008, and Legislative Chair 2005-2013. He was appointed to the State Dental Board in 2013 and was elected as the State Board President 2015-2017. He served as the President of the Delaware AGD 2001-2003 and an AGD Delegate for Region V 2001-2003. He is a Fellow of ICD, Pierre Fauchard Academy and the AGD. Currently Dr. McAllister is on the attending staff for the Dental Residency Program at Christiana Care Hospital and council member of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry.
Dr. Renee Broughten, (Public Member)
Dr. Renee Broughten is a chiropractor with a PhD in Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development. She is currently a professor in the Department of Interprofessional Education, at St. Catherine University, in St. Paul MN, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate health care students about evidence-based practice and healthcare teams. Prior to serving as the public/consumer Commissioner for the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards, she was a public member on the Pediatric Review Committee, for the Commission on Dental Education (2011-2015).
Dr. Anthony Carroccia, (ADA)
Dr. Anthony Carroccia is a graduate of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. He is a veteran of the US Army before starting his own practice in Clarksville, TN. Dr. Carroccia is a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), a Diplomat of the American Board of General Dentistry, where he also serves as a Director on their Board of Directors and is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists. He is a Trustee on the Tennessee Dental Association's Board of Trustees and also serves as the current TN-AGD President. Dr. Carroccia also is on the AGD's Fellowship Exam Development Committee, ADA's NBDE Part II/ADAT Construction Team and teaches state approved certification courses for RDAs and RDHs.
Dr. Jeffrey Chaffin, (AAPHD)
Dr. Jeff Chaffin is a public health dentist currently residing in Des Moines, Iowa. He serves as the Chief Dental Officer for Delta Dental of Iowa. His academic appointments include Assistant Professor and Dental Public Health Residency Director for A.T. Still University and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He completed a 21-year Army career with his last assignment serving as the Dental Chief for the TRICARE Management Activity. He is a graduate from the University of Tampa, and received a DDS from the University of Nebraska, a MPH from the University of Michigan, a MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a MHA from Baylor University. He completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Dr. Chaffin is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health. He is Past President of the American Board of Dental Public Health and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry.
Dr. Ralph Cooley, (ADA)
Dr. Ralph A. Cooley, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Services at U.T. School of Dentistry in Houston, was in private practice in Conroe, Texas before serving in this capacity. Dr. Cooley is a past president of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry and served on the national AGD Board of Directors, the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Benefit Programs, and the ADA's Code Revision Committee. Currently, he is a delegate to the Texas Dental Association House of Delegates, the AGD House, and the ADA House. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Dental Quality Alliance, the Code Maintenance Committee, and the AGD’s Dental Practice Council.
Dr. Alan Friedel, (ADA)
Dr. Alan E. Friedel is in the private practice of General Dentist in the Miami, Florida community. He has served the ADA in many capacities including Chairman of the Code Revision Committee (now the Code Maintenance Committee) for six consecutive years, Chairman of the Council on Dental Benefit Programs, Committee on Elder- Care, Electronic Health Record Work Group, Chairman ADA BOT Committee to Review CRC. Alan served in the ADA House of delegates for 16 years, including service on five reference committees, two as Chairman. He is past President of the Florida Dental Association. Dr. Friedel was adjunct faculty at the University of Florida Hialeah Clinic, was an advisor to the McFatter Technical School- Laboratory Technician Training program and was President of the Broward Dental Research Clinic.
Dr. Steven Ganzberg, (ASDA)
Dr. Steven Ganzberg is Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at the UCLA School of Dentistry and a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He taught at The Ohio State University medical and dental schools for 17 years before coming to UCLA. Dr. Ganzberg is a past president of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a past editor of Anesthesia Progress, the leading English language journal devoted to anesthesiology for dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is also active clinically as Director of Anesthesiology for the Century City Outpatient Surgery Center, a Joint Commission accredited surgery center focusing on oral, maxillofacial and facial plastic surgery. He has published over 70 original research articles and book chapters in the field.
Dr. Gayle Glenn, (AAO)
Dr. Gayle Glenn is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry. After earning her DDS at the University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio, she completed her Master’s degree in orthodontics from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1984. She has practiced orthodontics in Dallas, Texas for over 35 years and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. An experienced leader in organized dentistry and orthodontics, Dr. Glenn is a past-president of the American Association of Orthodontists. She is a fellow in both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
Dr. David Halpern, (ADA)
Dr. David Halpern is a general dentist in Columbia, Maryland. A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Halpern also completed a hospital residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He most recently served on the ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure and was Chair of the Committees of Continuing Dental Education and Recognition of Dental Specialties and Interest Areas in General Dentistry. He is a Past President of the Academy of General Dentistry, Howard County Dental Association, and Maryland State Dental Association Foundation.
Dr. Michaell A. Huber (AAOM)
Dr. Michaell A. Huber is a 1980 graduate from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, San Antonio, Texas. Following graduation he embarked upon 22 year career serving in United States Navy Dental Corps. He received a Certificate in Oral Medicine from the National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, Maryland in 1988 and is diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine. From 1996-1998, he served as Chairman, Department of Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Radiology and Director, Graduate Program in Oral Medicine, National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, Maryland and as Specialty Leader for Oral Medicine to the Surgeon General of the United States Navy, Washington, DC. In 2002 Dr. Huber returned to his alma mater and is a tenured professor teaching both pre-doctoral and graduate dental students. In 2019 he was awarded the UT System Regents Outstanding Teaching Award. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine.
Dr. William T. Johnson, (AAE)
Dr. William T. Johnson is a 1975 graduate from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Following graduation he served in the United States Army as a General Dental Officer in Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Dr. Johnson received his Certificate of Specialization in Endodontics and Master of Science Degree from the University of Iowa in 1981. Dr. Johnson has served as Department Chair at University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry and University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He has been President of the American Association of Endodontists (2012) and American Board of Endodontics (1999 and 2000), Trustee for the American Association of Endodontics from 2009 to 2013, member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Fellow in the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Johnson has also served as Secretary, Program Chair, Chair of the Endodontic Section of the American Dental Education Association (American Association of Dental Schools) from 1989-1992 and was Councilor for the section from 2000-2003 and served his four years (2003-2007) on the ADEA Council of Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs representing the American Association of Endodontists.
Dr. Jonathan B. Knapp (ADA)
Dr. Jonathan B Knapp is a General Dentist in private practice in Bethel, CT. He is a 1989 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. He has served the ADA in many capacities including as Vice Chair and Chair of the Council on Dental Practice. Dr. Knapp is currently the Chair of the Subcommittee on Information Exchange on ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics, and sits on the SCDI Oversight Committee. He was Chair of the EHR Interagency Workgroup, Chair of the EHR Members Advisory Subcommittee, and sits on the Dental Content Committee.Dr. Knapp has served 19 years as an ADA Delegate or Alternate, including as Chair of the Reference Committee on Legal and Legislative Matters. Dr. Knapp is a fellow in ICD, ACD and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is a past President of the Connecticut State Dental Association, and currently serves as Co-Chair of CSDA’s Council on Legislation.
Dr. Maureen Lang, (AAOP)
Dr. Maureen Lang is a 1982 graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She went on to serve in the United States Air Force Dental Corps for over 27 years. She has completed a 2-year Comprehensive Dentistry residency at the National Naval Dental Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and a 2-year master’s degree fellowship in Orofacial Pain at the University of Minnesota. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. She is also a past president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.
Dr. Edward H. Moody, Jr., (AAPD)
Dr. Edward H. Moody, Jr. is in private practice in Morristown, Tennessee. He received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Tennessee and completed his specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Moody has served in leadership roles at the state, regional, and national level as a member of the Tennessee Board of Dentistry and as President of the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Susan Muller, (AAOMP)
Dr. Susan Muller retired from Emory University October 2013 and is Professor Emeritus and is currently in private practice with Atlanta Oral Pathology. She held joint appointments in the Department of Pathology, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and the Winship Cancer Institute beginning in 1995. Dr. Muller is Past President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Past President of the North American Society of Head and Neck and Past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Muller was been Editor-in-Chief of Head and Neck Pathology from 2008-2019. Dr. Muller enjoys lecturing on Oral Pathology and has lectured throughout the world. She also published on her favorite topics and has more than 200 publications.
Dr. Prabu Raman, (ADA)
Dr. Prabu Raman is a general dentist from Kansas City, Missouri. His private practice focuses exclusively on: Cranio Cervical Mandibular Dysfunction / Temporo Mandibular Dysfunction, Complex Aesthetic restorative Dentistry and Dental Sleep Medicine / Oral Appliance therapy.
Dr. Raman serves as an active member of the ADA House of Delegates and Dental Licensure Objective Standardized Clinical Examination steering committee of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. He has served on the Council on Dental Education and Licensure, as Chair of ADA Recognition of Dental Specialties and Interest Areas in General Dentistry Committee and on the Task force on Recognition of Dental Specialties and advocated for the bylaw change at the ADA HOD to create the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards.
Dr. Raman has served as President of the Missouri Dental Association and Greater Kansas City Dental Society. He received his D.D.S. degree from University of Missouri- Kansas City, B.S. Radiology Technology from William Jewell College and B.Sc. Physics from University of Madras.
Dr. Aruna Ramesh, (AAOMR)
Dr. Aruna Ramesh is a full-time Professor and Associate Dean of Academic affairs, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She has been a faculty member at TUSDM since 2001. She received her MS in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, School of Dentistry in 2000 and DMD from TUSDM. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR). She served as the elected Councilor of Scientific Affairs and Public Policy for the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) till 2020. She is involved with educational, research, patient care and administrative responsibilities. She has a private practice limited to Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. She was the first practitioner to establish a solo private practice in OMFR in the New England area since 2008.
Dr. Mara Catey-Williams, (ADA)
Dr. Catey-Williams has a private general practice in north central Indiana. She is an adjunct faculty member in Clinical and Comprehensive Care at Indiana University School of Dentistry and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council. Her Doctorate in Dental Medicine was achieved in 1994 from Temple University School of Dentistry. She has served organized dentistry over the past 25 years in several capacities at the state level as well as the ADA 7th district national level. She is a member of the Indiana State Board of Dentistry and is the current President and rules sub-committee member. Her professional affiliations include fellowship in American College of Dentists, ICD, AADB and executive council member for dental/medical missions with Sonrisas Siempre. Dr. Catey-Williams is an ADEX examiner for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments and a member of the CDCA steering committee.
Dr. Brenda Young, (ADA)
Dr. Brenda Young is a general dentist practicing in Fairfax, Virginia. She is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. She is a fellow of the Virginia Dental Association, ACD, ICD and Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Young has served as president of the Northern Virginia Dental Society and founder of the NVDS Give Kids a Smile program. Currently, she is the Virginia Dental Association Science & Talent Award program chair and a member of the Virginia ADA Delegation.
