The National Commission Adopts New Resolution

At its March 28-29, 2022 meeting, the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards considered the American Board of Orofacial Pain application to be considered as the recognized national certifying board for orofacial pain. Based on review of the application, the National Commission determined that the Requirements for Recognition of National Certifying Boards for Dental Specialists had been met and adopted a resolution recognizing the American Board of Orofacial Pain as the national certifying board for orofacial pain.  

Request for Public Commissioner and Appeal Board Member Nominees

The National Commission is looking for a public/consumer member to fill one (1) upcoming vacancy on the National Commission Board of Commissioners (term start October 2022) and one (1) upcoming vacancy on the National Commission Appeal Board (term starts October 2022). Public member terms are four-years in length.

Meetings of the National Commission Board of Commissioners occur once per year (March/April) and are conducted in-person at the American Dental Association Headquarters Building in Chicago. The Appeal Board meets as required to conduct appeal hearings.

The Public/Consumer Member nominee must fulfill the following criteria: A commitment to bring the public/consumer perspective to Board of Commissioners and Appeal Board deliberations. The nominee should not have any formal or informal connection to the profession of dentistry; also, the member should have an interest in, or knowledge of health related issues. In order to serve, the nominee must not be a:

a. Dentist or member of an allied dental discipline;
b. Dental educator;
c. An employee of the American Dental Association or member of the American Dental Association governing board;
d. An employee or member of a governing board of any dentally-related corporation, business, organization or association;
e. An employee of a state dental board; or
f. A patient of record of a past or current commissioner or past or current officer of a group petitioning for recognition
g. Spouse, parent, child or sibling of an individual identified above (a through f).

Individuals interested in serving as the public member on the Board of Commissioners or Appeal Board should contact the National Commission office at baumannca@ada.org for the Public Member Nomination Form. Nominations must be submitted by July 1, 2022. 

National Commission Comment on Proposed Revisions to the Requirements for Recognition

At the its March 28-29, 2022 meeting, the Board of Commissioners approved the National Commissions comment letter that was submitted to the Council on Dental Education and Licensure related the revisions to the Requirements for Recognition. Meetings 

The National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards meets on an annual basis to discuss recognition of the dental specialties and certifying boards.  If the National Commission does not meet virtually, meetings are held at the American Dental Association Headquarters in Chicago, IL.
